ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The best decision I made was to go to the Stony Brook dental school for my teeth, gums, and mouth. The whole operation from registration, payments, x-rays, to staff interactions was super professional and straightforward. I'd recommend them to all my family and friends. They really know their stuff when it comes to general dentistry and periodontics in Stony Brook, NY.

My dentist was excellent and very professional. My hygienist is extremely professional, courteous, and excellent. The attending doctors are caring and helpful. All the dental assistants are competent and work well with my providers. They all work as a team. Couldn't be happier with the general dentistry and periodontics care here in Stony Brook.

I first contacted the school because it was recommended to me. My first visit was in May 2024. They said I needed two teeth pulled and some fillings. On my second visit, I told my dentist that one of my front teeth was wiggling. She checked and said the post was cracked. Since it's really noticeable, I asked for something fast. She suggested a flipper, took impressions after pulling the rest, but when it came, it didn't fit at all. The remake was better but still not great. Honestly, the whole experience has been frustrating.
Owner Response

Vashti at the front desk is extremely rude, her attitude is disgusting. If you don't have patience, don't work there. They don't take accountability for anything wrong. If you report something, they defend it or brush it off. They make you wait way past your appointment time. Why have appointments if they're not on time? And nobody picks up the phone. Why have a receptionist?
Owner Response

It really depends on who you get as your student dentist. The first one I had was great, caring and lovely. The one this time made a few degrading comments, and it took everything not to bring it up to the head dentist. No excuse for that behavior. Some of them seem to look down on patients for ignorant reasons. Being young isn't an excuse for being a crappy person.
Owner Response
We appreciate your honesty and apologize for the negative experience at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in Stony Brook. We will address this with our team to ensure all patients are treated with respect. Please contact us so we can make it right.

I recently visited with my elderly mother and had an uncomfortable experience at the front desk. The cashier, I think named Stephanie, was loudly discussing my mom's procedure. It was embarrassing to have her private info heard by others. She even laughed with a colleague while mentioning extractions. Confidentiality should be a priority, especially in healthcare. Makes me question their professionalism.
Owner Response
We sincerely apologize for this breach of privacy at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in Stony Brook. Patient confidentiality is critical, especially during procedures like extractions. We will retrain our staff to ensure this doesn't happen again. Please contact us to discuss further.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Waited two months for an appointment with Dr. Parmvir Kaur. All they did was an X-ray, no treatment or follow-up. I reached out because I was in pain, and they said wait another month. How can you go three times for one infected tooth? I ended up flying to Turkey, got full treatment for less, and had a vacation. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Owner Response
We're sorry for the delay and pain you experienced at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in Stony Brook. We strive to provide timely care for root canal treatment and other services. We'll review our scheduling to improve. Please contact us so we can learn from your experience.

This is the most mismanaged place I've ever experienced. If you're in pain, this place will make it worse. It's lacking in so many areas—just getting someone on the phone is impossible, and when you do, operators seem confused. Patient care is just a concept. I dealt with this nightmare for over 2 years before walking away. Dr. Patrick M. Lloyd, the director, is obviously ineffective.

I haven't gotten treatment at this place, but I don't care to after having an orthodontic consultation today. I'm so irritated because I drove an hour from my home to arrive, only to be told that "Yes, I'm eligible for braces". Well the office could have told me that it was going to be such a looong arduous process. I'm used to private offices and having medical consultations done at once, i.e, x-rays, cleanings, then consult IN ONE DAY! NOT SPENDING 15 MIN OR SO ONLY TO BE TOLD I CAN GET BRACES. And then what irritated me the most was that the school didn't take the time to explain all that about the consultation BEFORE me coming. If they did, I honestly don't remember. But instead, I had Angie, Regine, or whatever her name is, at Ortho, tell me the process AFTER the fact that there's basically a part 2 of the consultation. I understand that its a school but these offices need to make us aware of just how different or how long their treatments are, and not wait until after we make an appointment. I also took the liberty to ask about their dentistry to this Indian lady at the student desk. I didn't care for her attitude. She didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked that. She assumed that I was asking about being an actual student...*facepalm*...again, being in a dental school bubble. Lastly, I didn't appreciate this corny old security guard staring at me every time he saw me on Friday, 9/12/2025.

I came back 25 years later , Im a returning patient my student 3 yr. Passed boards . He’s great knows my story , the professors the same . I’m so grateful to all of them. Yes there’s rules, but before I went read some reviews, ppl shouldn’t get implants in my case , I can’t bone disease. . But wouldn’t get even if I could , my friends have cracked fell out , now 4 screws, 4 teeth attached to bone , so no more individual. All up to date technology. So my last dentist juiced my insurance, capped teeth that could have been saved. So it takes time but 3 Dentists , tried took insurance, so elixir 350 , for a cap after new glued on cap , , ok out of there, then they offer the credit card ok that’s a big problem. . 2 nd. Talk about gross told me I had 2 bacterial infections, first of all , The Smilest told me they were going to put a needle through my 3 way bridge, walked out and as I was on chair , girl walks in with instrument says hey u want a cleaning, I’m medically inclined , get ur filth out of my face. They now merged all about money , 3 rd Manorville P it starts with, says 350 again to put this glue so cap don’t make my gum turn black, well check , and I do tape record, my dentist is retiring but o ran back making sure there was no bacterial infection, there was none, She looked it was old scar tissue from 20 years ago, Stony Brook is the best: especially for kids, They do braces for kids, but you must really understand, I’m brushing 2 x day and listeinre at night , knock off brand can’t afford brand, they scan when you get in / first 3 appointments are a pain but 6 months later , had saved my front bottom teeth , major fillings, Ppl dedicate 3 misses ur out , Unless ER also if you have A toothache they will get doctor in Stony Brook er , give u Novocain but next day , appointment , They should be really recognized . Everyone makes mistakes , but I was put through hell buy dentists since I was a kid. I’m so grateful

I get it. They’re students. I really really get it. The whole point is they’re learning. They’re practicing. However they’re putting people through absolute hell. LOW INCOME individuals at that. They treat everyone with so much disdain and disrespect. I had an extremely traumatic experience and I cannot believe no one is doing anything to remedy these things. The way Stonybrook doctors are taught to treat patients is pure insanity.

This place needs investigation into front desk customer service. Whoever manages, look into it. Send someone undercover. They're steering away business. You say good morning and get a nasty attitude. Not coming back with my kids because I didn't feel welcome. At least the cashier guy had manners. Stony Brook should just look at recent reviews to find the bad employees.

I heard this is reasonable dental care... I'm on Social security can't afford going to the dentist because of the costs of keeping my home. After the phone call I found out just the beginning fees are as much as any local dentist. Only good to go if you are on welfare and medicaid. Of course paid by my tax dollars. NYS sucks!

I would give them a 0 if possible based on the conversation I just had with a woman trying to make an appointment for my son. She was returning my call on which I left a detailed message. Fine, I had to explain the situation again, no big deal. From there she was just downright rude, completely unhelpful and no way to talk to someone. She was nasty asking me what I needed, nasty asking me what insurance I have (they don't take my primary), nasty telling me that I'd have to call someone else to see about the secondary insurance and then lastly, nasty when she said to me "you do realize this is a school right?". Well you never told me that, and the number I was given by my dentist and called was for the hospital, so no, I didn't know this was a school. I would never bring anyone there and would steer anyone thinking about going there away. The front desk is what sets the atmosphere for an office and if this is what you have to deal with, I don't even care to see what their dentists are like.

My bottom right molar had a metal filling since I was a kid. Not long ago the tooth cracked in half and the filling fell out. My tooth was in excruciating pain and I couldn't find a dentist that took my insurance that could see me without a wait time of at least a week. I called Stony Brook school of medicine and they made me an appointment for the next day. I showed up and they checked my tooth to see if they could save it with a root cannal. Unfortunately the tooth was too far gone so they ended up pulling it for me. The dentist I saw was a really nice guy. He had 4 female students that watched over the procedure and they were very polite. I'm not sure about others but I can speak for myself and say I'm glad I chose to come here. Everyone was very polite and the dentist took the time to sit with me and explain everything. I was admitted into the emergency care because I was in pain so this review is for them. If your in a similar situation I recommend going and giving them a chance. Don't let all the bad reviews put you off. Go and find out for yourself.

If I could give them a 0 I would. Started there April 2024 to have a partial lower denture made. It is now the end of May 2025. It is still not right. Yes, they tried but they had no clue what to do. The first dentist I saw filled a couple of cavities. Well, I just had them refilled by a ‘real’ dentist. They couldn’t even get that right. Spend a couple of extra bucks & go to a real dentist with a real practice. I could go on but I think you get the point.

Not sure why this place has awful reviews??? I had a wonderful experience! No work done yet but I have extreme dental anxiety and being in the chair is just scary for me. Dr. Wu made me feel so at ease! I’m so glad I finally found a dentist who cares and takes the time to explain everything he was doing. Although I have to get an extraction, my anxiety is no longer through the roof and I am looking forward to it. The student who was watching also made me feel better and talked to me about his experiences too. The head dentist was also super nice and gave me an exam as well. They really take the time to make their patients comfortable and get to know them.
