My husband and I chose to take our son to Midlands Pediatric Dentistry for many reasons. One of those was because it had excellent reviews. This review, however, is not going to be one of them. My family and I have never been treated as disrespectfully at a professional medical facility as we were at Midlands Pediatric Dentistry on March 23, 2026. For almost a decade my son, who has non-verbal autism and sensory issues, had been a patient here. He never liked going to the dentist, but somehow when he was small, we made it work. As he grew into a teenager, our visits became more and more stressful. Even so, I assumed that the facility understood my son’s special needs. This dentistry is over an hour away from our home, but because it claims to be “special needs friendly”on its website, we thought it would be a good fit for us. Also factoring in to our decision was that it lists nitrous oxide on its website. We were thinking this would be a remedy for our anxious child”s appointments when he got older. During our final visit, my son did not cooperate with obtaining x-rays or during his cleaning. The hygienist did her best to clean his teeth, and she was very patient and kind to us. My son did grab at her hands and shirt, and squeeze to try to prevent her from coming near his mouth. My husband and I helped hold him. I was expecting the doctor to come in and say something to the effect of “looks like your son is having some trouble; let’s work on a plan for next time.” There was no mention of the nitrous oxide that may have helped calm our child. There were no suggestions to remedy the situation at all. In fact, when Dr. Shoun came in for the examination, we were told that at age 15 and 3 weeks, my son had “aged out” of pediatric dentistry. (Only one year earlier he had told us that our son would continue in pediatric dentistry until the age of 18). We were then told that when children become “combative” it is inappropriate for a pediatric setting. (We were always in a room of our own so as not to frighten the neurotypical children in case of an outburst). We were then asked by Dr. Shoun if we had noticed any behavioral changes recently in our son. As we replied “no, he just doesn’t like people messing with his mouth,” we were rebutted with a snarky “so he is a perfect angel everywhere else.” My son was then referred to an ADULT dentistry that I later discovered doesn’t even accept children until they turn 16. Shouldn’t the referring doctor have known this? I was, needless to say, furious with what had taken place. I sat there in disbelief at what had occurred. The discrimination against my son was palpable. If Dr. Shoun no longer wanted to treat my son, there was certainly a more suitable way of expressing it. I came home, hugged my son, cried like a baby, and immediately began investigating new PEDIATRIC dentists who specialize in treating children with disabilities. If you have a neurodivergent child as I do, run far, far away from this place. No one deserves to be treated that way, much less a patient with special needs. Attached is the referral form that we were given. Notice it reads “autistic’ as a diagnosis. “Autistic” is not a diagnosis. “Autism”” or, more appropriately, “ASD” is.

Hands down the best pediatric dentist in the Midlands. Moved here 6 years ago and my kids have been coming ever since—always a great experience. The staff is super friendly and compassionate with my kiddos. My 7-year-old actually loves her appointments. My autistic son even lets them treat him, which says a lot. Dr. Shoun always greets us with a smile and explains everything thoroughly. And the office is spotless every single time. Love this place!

Very rude receptionist. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told 'this call isn't going any further.' Don't recommend them, especially if your child doesn't like the dentist. My child was upset and scared of the gas mask, and they dropped us. Never again—horrible way to handle things.
